Ancile uPerform: more on editing "grouped" steps, plus complaining about Captivate. Also: template settings
As a supplement to the last post, below is a not-very-slick-looking video I created in Adobe Captivate. It shows a little demo of editing the weird clustered steps that happen in Ancile uPerform when you perform several actions on the same screen. This is due to the default template setting, which tries to save space in the demo by recycling the same screen into as many steps as possible.
Note that this video is exemplary of how bad Adobe Captivate's video capabilities actually are. I mean both in editing and in quality. When I captured this video I tried to run through the steps very slowly, but it was still too fast. I did it a second time, and still, even counting out the seconds between actions: too fast. I have not discovered any means of editing the video to slow it down, which annoys me to no end.
Anyway, here's the vid:

The lack of editing capability in Captivate caused some problems for me at my last job. Ultimately, I took a bunch of screencasts I had created in Captivate and got so frustrated trying to edit them that I just imported them as mp4s into Premiere Pro to do proper edits. This still took three times longer than it would have in Camtasia – a hassle I could have avoided if I'd only had access to Camtasia in the first place. There's something to be said for being able to do hacks like that, but sometimes you just gotta have the right tools for the job, y'know? Don't even ask me about all the reasons why Premiere Pro is also not the best choice for editing screencasts, that's a blog post all by itself.
UPDATE:
So, I knew this "grouped/clustered steps" thing was something that could be changed in the template, but I didn't know how to do it. I just figured out, right after finishing up this post, that it can theoretically be changed on the "File" tab under "Information" in the template. There is a drop-down on this page called "Default Screen Display for Steps in the Document Editor," where you can select "Always."
...Unfortunately, I'm not permitted to change the template settings for my current work project, so I can't test whether it actually does what I think it does. But this is how I think you change it in the template. I'll keep you posted! Update: Yes! This is how you do this!
